Dr Bill Medland
Dr Bill Medland is committed to ensuring the Medland Orthodontics name is synonymous with beautiful smiles, technical expertise and five star customer service. His passion for orthodontics is infectious and he is celebrated amongst patients and the dental community alike for his energy, superior quality work and charisma.
Dr Medland is an advocate for continuous learning and staying at the forefront of orthodontic advancements. He is an expert in modern orthodontic treatments like Invisalign and SureSmile, and has access to the latest technologies guaranteeing you receive the best results possible.
Dr Medland grew up in Queensland and graduated from the University of Queensland Dental School. He then set his sights on one of the world’s top orthodontic and functional jaw orthopaedic centres, the University of North Carolina, where he was accepted as the first non-American student. After training concluded, Dr Medland completed a two year research fellowship before returning to Australia to practice with his lovely wife, Dr Patty Medland.
Known as ‘the’ orthodontist on the Gold Coast, Dr Bill Medland also lectures for Invisalign hosting webcasts for dental industry professionals. He is a trusted source of information on a variety of orthodontic topics and enjoys sharing his knowledge with peers and patients. Adding to his accolades, he was also one of the first local orthodontists to use lingual (inside) braces. Dr Medland was the first Queensland orthodontist to include his practice in the We Fight Chalky Teeth network.
If Dr Medland isn’t straightening teeth or studying the latest in orthodontic developments, you will find him relaxing on the water making the most of the great Gold Coast lifestyle.
Dr Patty Medland
Dr Patty Medland is loved by her patients, as her signature warm and friendly chair-side manner makes both children and adults feel instantly at ease. Dr Medland brings a wealth of expertise and local and international experience to the practice, with qualifications in orthodontics and children’s dentistry.
Dr Medland’s dual training provides particular insight on the growth and development of teeth and jaws in children. This unique skill set has positioned Dr Medland as a leader in her field, with parents and their children travelling from far and wide to experience her vast knowledge in this highly specialized discipline.
Dr Medland completed her dental degree at West Virginia University in the United States and then undertook her paediatric dental and orthodontic specialty training at the University of North Carolina; two highly acclaimed world class universities.
In order to uphold her reputation for being the best, Dr Medland is continuously upskilling and updating her orthodontics knowledge. Like her husband Dr Bill Medland, she is also an expert in popular cutting edge treatments such as Invisalign and Suresmile 3D technology.
Passionate about education, Dr Medland has held teaching positions in orthodontics as well as in paediatric dentistry at West Virginia University, University of North Carolina and University of Sydney. For over 10 years she also lectured in the Graduate Orthodontic Program at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, and recently taught orthodontics as an Associate Professor at Griffith University here on the Gold Coast. She has also been invited to lecture on Suresmile technology to orthodontic students in Australia and the United States.
An avid animal lover, Dr Patty Medland has been involved in voluntary wildlife rescue programs and in her downtime, she loves to keep fit and travel – especially to the USA to visit family!
Dr Melissa Nguyen
With fresh ideas backed by impressive qualifications and solid industry experience, Dr Nguyen is a valuable addition to the Medland family.
Dr Nguyen holds a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science and a Graduate Diploma of Dentistry, both from Griffith University. She also has a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics from the University of Adelaide.
An Australasian Orthodontic Board certified specialist, Dr Nguyen and has been awarded membership to the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She is also a member of the Australian Orthodontic Society, the American Orthodontic Society, the European Orthodontic Society and the Australian Dental Association.
Dr Nguyen has previously worked in private practice as a dentist for 4 years and as a clinical supervisor at Griffith University. Her research has been published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and she has presented lectures at local and international orthodontic conferences. She has also undertaken research into temporary anchorage devices (TADs), a new and exciting technology we are adopting at Medland Orthodontics to provide more aesthetically pleasing treatment outcomes.
Born and raised in Canberra, Dr Nguyen enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends, including her beloved ‘fur baby’ Muffins the cat. She is also learning the acoustic guitar and training to become a Pilates instructor.
Dr William Luong
We are excited to introduce Dr William Luong, the newest member to the Medland Orthodontics team.
Dr Luong attained his dental degree locally from Griffith University, subsequently working for several years as a dentist on the Gold Coast as well as maintaining a role as a clinical tutor at Griffith University. He then pursued further study in Orthodontics at the University of Adelaide. Having completed his specialist orthodontic qualifications, he attained his Membership in Orthodontics with the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. He is also a certified member of the Australian Orthodontic Board. Valuing continuing education, he has maintained strong links to the University of Adelaide, having helped set up the Adelaide Orthodontic Alumni and one day hopes to guide future Orthodontists. He is also an active member of the Australian Dental Association, the Australian Society of Orthodontists, the American Association of Orthodontists, the European Orthodontic Society and is a fellow of the World Federation of Orthodontists.
When not at work, Dr Luong enjoys an aquatic life, whether it be out on the water fishing on his kayak, or at home looking after his reef aquarium. He is also passionate about food, enjoying growing most of the families’ food in the backyard then serving it on the dinner table!
